Today was the FINAL full day of my Independent Writer Retreat. I am happy to report that I achieved 1 goal! (see pic below). I reached my 80,000 word finish line! My novel is so much further along than when I started and as an overall “pantser” I can see where it’s going now and how it needs to finish. Unless my characters decide differently. But for now, my fingers are tired, my brain is numb, and I’m thrilled. I feel a great sense of accomplishment and gratitude this very moment.

Gratitude for the ability to do this and for an understanding and loving husband who didn’t bat an eye when I said I needed to do this, and supported me all the way. Gratitude for all of you, your encouragement and support. (Hand heart!)

Tomorrow, I may finish the scene I was working on while I eat salad for breakfast (it’s the only thing I have left because I ate all the rest of my groceries). The scene might take about an hour–and then I’ll pack up the car and head home, pick up the hubby and go visit elders, get errands done and essentially become part of the Muggle world again. But, wow, I had pure magic for 4 days. I laughed and cried as I wrote, I could see my characters and the places they were. I felt the rain, the fear and terror they felt. I embraced the love and understood their anger. I think this retreat was probably one of the most transformative moments of my life. Because it was so successful, I’ve planned ahead for the entire year and booked at least one long weekend a month here. Arrive on a Friday and leave on a Monday if its not a holiday weekend and leave on a Tuesday if it is a holiday weekend. And I will come back for a full week next year in February. By then, I’ll be finishing up a novella or short novel titled “Unbirth” and starting a new novel titled “As Above, So Below.”

My best to all of you out there. And to you, my dear writer friends, if you are wondering if maybe you should do something like this, I do encourage you. Even if it’s only once a year, if you set your mind to it, create a goal, plan how to get there and then commit to it when you are at your retreat space, you will have success. Let me know when you go so I can read your story! Ciao for now!
